Fragrance In-Depth: Fougère

'Fougère’ (French for ‘fern’) was coined as a fragrance family with the creation of the perfume 'Fougère Royale' in 1882. Within this perfume the scent of ferns was imagined (as they themselves do not actually have an odour!), and the resulting accord was immortalised into perfumery forever.

The typical fougère accord involves a top note of lavender, a heart of tonka bean, and a base of oakmoss. Fougère by Howarth & Lear builds upon this base to deliver our own unique interpretation of this classic scent.

Top notes of fresh bergamot and spicy black pepper assist in providing a bold impact from the initial spray. For the heart, geranium and lily of the valley provide a smooth floral accord with hints of spiced rose. In the base, rich cedar and dark vetiver combine with amber to reveal the scent of elegant woods.
